The Silk Road of Friendship: China’s Cultural Diplomacy towards the UAE
Original language description
With the revival of the Silk Road connections, the long tradition of exchange between China and the Middle East is currently being emphasized by the leadership of both sides, the Chinese as well as the Arabs. Longstanding friendship is being promoted, with the accent on cultural similarities, such as the shared Muslim culture, and calls for mutual respect, represented by non-intervention agreements regarding each other’s affairs. However, behind the rich rhetoric that supports the revival of academic ideas and culture exchange stands a clearly defined set of specific interests in relation to the expansion of trade connections and economic cooperation. These more material goals are obviously at the forefront of the diplomatic agendas of the People’s Republic of China (PRC) and the United Arab Emirates (UAE)
