This study examines the development of the Romanian Cyrillic script within the broader framework of Church Slavonic (CS) orthographic traditions. Emerging in the Late Middle Ages, Romanian Cyrillic was primarily shaped by the phonological and graphic conventions of Church Slavonic, especially in Moldavia and Wallachia. The article traces how different regional variants of CS spelling—Galician-Volhynian, Tărnovo, Serbian, and Bulgarian chancery traditions—contributed to the adaptation of Cyrillic for transcribing Romanian. Special attention is given to phonological challenges such as the representation of sibilants, diphthongs, and nasal vowels, as well as the introduction and evolution of new letters and clusters. The analysis highlights both the continuity of inherited Slavic orthographic practices and the innovations required to accommodate Romanian phonology. Ultimately, the Romanian Cyrillic system emerges as a hybrid tradition: deeply rooted in Slavic orthography, yet progressively reshaped to reflect the linguistic realities of Romanian, culminating in distinct spelling types and the eventual stabilization of orthographic norms in the seventeenth century.
