The chapter explores the complex process of language genesis, contrasting modern sociolinguistic perspectives with the historical development of languages. It examines how new languages emerge through splitting, which is driven either by internal linguistic changes or external factors such as contact and political shifts. The text then discusses language elaboration, detailing how standard languages are planned and codified. It also questions the applicability of these modern models to pre-modern language evolution. Finally, it presents a three-phase model for written language genesis – hybridisation, inscription and inscripturation – which has so far been applied to the study of medieval languages, emphasising the role of discourse communities and cultural contexts over rigid standardisation. The chapter presents the emergence of new languages as an ongoing, periodically repeating process caused by cultural and linguistic contact, and the continuity of written culture from the advent of scripture to the present day.
