Original language description
Josef Sudek’s life’s work allows us to discover yet unknown chapters in his oeuvre, which include his frequent commissions to photograph art works, and most importantly sculptures. Four thematic essays focus on the various scope and legacy of Sudek's work. One chapter focuses on a conservator workshop. The book’s second part is formed by the short texts on Sudek’s most important customers who were sculptors, artistic societies or publishers. These show the surprising interconnection of Sudek’s work with the artistic circles and tendencies of his day. Together, the book sheds light on the shifting tension between the ability of photographs to bring art closer to the people and their potential as works of art in their own right, raising important questions for the history of photography.
