Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis: Current Diagnosis, Treatment and Management

  • Original language description

The clinical featurec of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) consists of progressive neurological deteriorations that reflect the impairment and subsequent loss of muscle functions, resulting from the death of motor neurons in the corticospinal tract, brain stem or the ventral horns of the spinal cord. Up to now several electrophysiological and neuroimaging indicators of manifested ALS have been developed, but only candidate biomarkers have been suggested to have a potential role in the diagnosis and prognosis of ALS, with further testing needed. Currently, there is no clinically relevant treatment available for ALS. The therapeutic strategies comprise a neuroprotective treatment focused on antiglutamatergic, antioxidant, antiapoptotic, anti-inflammatory and neurotrophic molecules, as on well as gene therapy and stem cell application.
