Cartilage Tissue Engineering-Basics, Principles, Materials
Original language description
Skin is the largest organ of the body and serves as a barrier between the internal and external environment. Its integrity is crucial for thermoregulation, hydration retention and especially protection against infection. In order to facilitate its essential functions, the skin continuously undergoes renewal. Wound healing is a complex process which involves the coordinated action of many bioactive molecules and numerous cell types. Even though the regeneration capacity of the organism itself is wide, there are certain conditions which can prolong the healing or even make it impossible thus leading to a chronic wound, these can also increase health care costs. Tissue engineering brings new alternative strategies of wound healing and tissue regeneration. A noncellular scaffold made of biocompatible material enriched with a stimulating growth factor, could support and accelerate damaged tissue restoration. This would be beneficial for patients with critical size skin defects such as diabetic ulcers or with deep burns. This chapter reviews the basic principles of skin tissue engineering. It will be focused on skin anatomy, skin substitutes and the basic fibroblast growth factor function.
