Eye organoids as a useful tool for studies of eye development and human ocular diseases
Original language description
Organoid model represents a major technological breakthrough that has been developed to allow in vitro studies of tissues and organs. The organoids often possess cell type complexity, 3D organization and function that is remarkably similar to their in vivo counterparts. Eye organoids were successfully derived from pluripotent stem cells for the lens tissue, retina and retinal pigment epithelium. Combination of genetic, transcriptomic and proteomic approaches applied to eye organoids will undoubtedly reveal crucial aspects of development, homeostasis and disease of the human eye.
