Conditional gene deletion in the mouse lens by Cre/loxP system
Original language description
Cre/loxP conditional knockout strategy has revolutionized functional genomics in a mouse model by limiting the extent of gene deletion. The conditional mutant alleles for the vast majority of mouse genes are available for possible phenotypic analysis. Their utility is to a large extent dependent on the availability of strains of transgenic mice with a tissue- or time-restricted activity of Cre recombinase. The two most commonly used lens-specific Cre recombinase transgenic lines are Le-Cre and MLR10-Cre, both of which have certain limitations. Development and characterization of additional stage-specific or spatially-restricted Cre recombinase transgenic lines is therefore highly desirable in order to facilitate future lens research.
