Old Czech Biblical Prologues: A Medieval Reader’s Gateway to the Study of the Bible
Original language description
This study examines the Old Czech translations of Latin biblical prologues, the most common parabiblical texts in the Czech Bibles of the 14th and 15th century. The aim of the prologues was to facilitate the pre-understanding of the difficult biblical text for the readers, familiarise them with the issues of the book concerned and outline its contents. This is also the reason why they can be found in many of the extant Old Czech biblical manuscripts. The study presents the surviving Old Czech translations of the biblical prologues, focusing on the changes in wording that occurred during the copying of the manuscripts.
