“Jewish” names and antisemitism in Czech press (1867‒1918)
Original language description
The study analyses antisemitic notes in Czech‑language newspapers during the time of the Austro‑Hungarian Empire. Some of the stereotypes consisted of “Jewish” names that became ethnic epithets. Names with high frequency of occurrence among the Jewish population (e.g., Kohn, Löwy) were considered characteristically Jewish as well as compound surnames (e.g., Schönberg, Rosenzweig) or those ending in ‑es (e.g., Abeles, Karpeles). However, when Jews tried to get rid of stigmatizing names and rename themselves, it provoked further criticism in the press. “Revealing” the original name was a popular journalistic procedure. Another technique was to list various “Jewish” surnames as “evidence”, e.g., of the connection between Czech Jews and Germans, free‑masons, socialists, etc.
