Semiconductor lasers for medical applications
Original language description
Semiconductor lasers are very specific laser devices with a very wide field of application. The laser properties are usually not as good as in classical gas or solid state lasers. The power output used to be lower, the space coherence is terrible withoutoptics, they usually operate in the multimode regime, they have wide mode spectral width. But the advantages of semiconductor lasers prevail and it is possible overcome the previously mentioned disadvantages. Semiconductor lasers can be directly pumpedby an electrical current, they have extremely high efficiency, they are very small and compact, laser light can be generated from 1 ?m2, thus it is easy to connect them to optical fibers, the majority of laser chips are low cost, semiconductor laser light can be generated in a wide spectral region, the laser light can be tunable, and huge laser arrays with optical power of hundreds kW can be constructed. Thus this type of laser is widely used in many applications including medicine.
