Fast X-ray CT of the low attenuation specimen during loading experiment
Original language description
Bone scaffolds serve as a support for three dimensional tissue formation from implanted cells. To achieve the goal of tissue reconstruction, scaffolds must meet some specific requirements as high porosity and proper mechanical properties for instance. Fast X-ray CT during loading test can serve as an adequate tool for scaffold microstructure evaluation as well as for analysis of its mechanical properties. Analyzed bioactive glass reinforced gellan-gum bone scaffold specimen is highly porous and very low attenuating material with relatively small diameter. Moreover, this highly nonlinear material has significant relaxation behavior if the loading is interrupted. Therefore X-ray CT measurement is principially highly demanding task for which several principal conditions must be fullfiled – CT data acquisition has to be fast enough to suppress material relaxation effect; X-ray imaging detector must be sensitive for low energy X-ray photons; loading device has to be able to control loading force with high precision even for very low values. It was proven that fast single photon counting detector can fulfill related experimental requirements in conjuction with especially developed loading device. Totally 34 CT measurements were done during 100 minutes where scaffold specimen was continuously loaded up to maximal force 2 N, when scaffold started to be unstable. Reconstructed volumes showed behavior of the scaffold structure during loading and related 4DCT data set was assembled.
