Lateral buckling of continuous composite bridge girder
Original language description
A frequent solution for middle span road bridges is a continuous girder consisting of several parallel steel beams connected to a concrete deck. Lateral buckling can occur in the regions close to internal support where the compressed lower flange does not get any continuous lateral restraint. Because the upper flange is supported by the concrete slab the section does not remain rigid (unchangeable), but the web distorts. This phenomenon is usually called lateral distortional buckling (LDB). Usually andconservatively the problem is solved by a method of inverted continuous U-frame, which approximates it as buckling of the compressed part of the section. Though the number of studies on LDB is very small compared to the number of studies on LTB (lateraltorsional buckling) the problem of LDB has been constantly explored using finite element method or finite strip method, both combined with the principle of minimal potential energy. Despite of that, there is no universal design procedure
