The performance of new generation geogrids within trackbed under cyclic railway loading
Original language description
The use of geogrids to stabilise railway trackbed has been established to offer designers and operators benefits in terms of reduced maintenance costs. The paper examines the effect of including new generation of polypropylene geogrids with triangular apertures into trackbed construction. Results of extensive performance testing on full scale trackbed construction will be used to assess the effect of `mechanically stabilised? granular layers when subjected to cyclic loading compared with nonstabilised sections. Settlement data through the construction will be used to demonstrate the benefit of the geogrid. The importance of developing effective interaction between the geogrid structure and the granular fill will be discussed with a practical result that the application of this technology can increase the time between maintenance cycles by up to a factor of three offering economic benefits to the railway operators.
