Biodiversity, forest condition mapping and forest harvesting monitoring using UAV

  • Original language description

For the monitoring of ecologically valuable areas, terrestrial measurements and precise actual thematic maps are needed. For the creation of this, several methods can be used. In less accessible or inactive areas, remote sensing or aerial methods are suitable. In this paper, UAV or nowadays better known as RPAS (remotely piloted aircraft systems) methods are discussed. The first part is focused on the use of RPAS for national natural reserve (NNR Bozidarske raseliniste) biodiversity mapping and monitoring. This NNR is located in a mountain area on the border of the Czech Republic with the Germany. For vegetation monitoring, it is advantageous to use a camera sensitive in the near infrared range (600-850nm). If you have this, you can take using RPAS hundreds of photos, create an orthophoto and compute the normalized vegetation index (NDVI) by red and near infrared channel separation from orthophotos. NDVI helps classify the vegetation status. The above mentioned small natural national reserve was monitored for two years using RPAS, and several orthophotos using NIR and VIS camera were created. From measurement, thematical maps were created with a resolution 5cm. The second part of this paper discuses the experimental use of RPAS for forest harvest monitoring and forest condition mapping. As a case project, a mountain spruce forest near the NNR was selected with planned forest harvesting. In this locality, small area terrestrial laser scanning and photogrammetry were experimentally used. Results from the joining of data, usability and economics of RPAS in forest management and ecology were discussed in conclusion
