The Evaluation Methodology for Building Information Modeling in Construction Projects
Original language description
There is an increased need for Building Information Modeling (BIM) implementation nowadays. BIM is an important part of modern civil engineering as a tool, which can be used during the whole project life cycle with significant impact on quality, efficiency and sustainability of a construction. Construction companies are struggling with its implementation into their practice. They reach different levels of success based on various conditions. However, there is already large potential in both market and public sector to push BIM related standards, directives and other legislation and to support BIM implementation. One of such directives in the EU is 2014/24/EU directive about public procurement. It supports decision making process based not only on price, but also on quality, and sustainable intelligent growth. The BIM can be used as a tool which allows achievement of these goals. One of the problems with procurement of BIM is the vague definition of BIM and complicated measurability of its benefits. In other words, the market lacks BIM awareness. An evaluation could be used to assess, benchmark or even certificate construction project based on the utilized BIM tools and methods. Such evaluation would constitute a very powerful decision making tool. That would increase awareness in the market and lead to better, more efficient and sustainable construction. The paper analyses the problem by review and practical experience and proposes simple methodology for construction project evaluation based on BIM utilization during the whole project life cycle.
