Railway sleepers are made of traditional materials such as hard wood or concrete, nevertheless sleepers are also extruded from polymers or composites, which are considered as alternative materials. Ambient temperature affects the polymers’ characteristics, especially the thermal expansion, which causes the change of length or volume. The consequence of thermal expansion to plastic railway sleeper is its deformation, which may influence the rail gauge. This research aims to discuss the possible development of railway sleepers made of chosen recycled plastic and is mainly focused on the determination of its thermal expansion. In addition, the selected recycled plastic was reinforced with glass fibre aiming to reduce the thermal expansion. The main contribution of this paper is the determination of the coefficient of linear thermal expansion, the evaluation of the glass reinforcement effect and comparison of results with other recycled plastics applied in the production of railway sleepers.
