Long-term durability assessment of restored hardplaster facades: a mixed computationalexperimental approach
Original language description
This study presents a mixed computational-experimental approach to assess the long-term durability of restored hard-plaster facades typical of 20thcentury architecture. Three plaster formulations, incorporating varying amounts of cement, lime hydrate, and recycled brick powder, were evaluated in terms of their mechanical properties and hygrothermal performance. Laboratory tests provided key input parameters for hygrothermal simulations under realistic climatic conditions specific to Prague, Czech Republic. The results reveal that while moderate brick powder substitution can enhance mechanical strength, excessive amounts may reduce cohesion and durability. Computational modelling highlighted the role of porosity in improving freeze-thaw resistance by promoting moisture redistribution and limiting surface freezing. The study underscores the necessity of balancing mechanical and hygrothermal behaviour when selecting restoration materials. This integrated method supports informed material choices that enhance both the structural resilience and heritage compatibility of renovated facades.
