A General Approach to Thermal Error Modelling of Machine Tools
Original language description
This paper introduces a general approach to thermal error modelling of machine tools based on transfer functions (dynamic model). Transfer function (TF) contains the nature of the heat transfer principles. Thus the calibration of the empirical parametersis simple and in addition, the model is more reliable with untested inputs and it can even be used reliably to extrapolate data. The applicability and robustness of the software compensation based on TF have been verified on 3 different machine tool structures. Tested compensation algorithms proved their ability to significantly reduce thermal errors at the tool centre point (TCP) independently of the machine tool structure. Moreover, the results of the TF models for different machine tool structures were compared with models obtained via MLR as a case study. Much better accuracy and reliability of these TF models were shown in all tested cases.
