    Cooling of SI Engine Charge by Heat Pump – Thermodynamic Nonsense?

    Trying to find possible ways to SI engine efficiency increase, the combination of high compression ratio and low initial charge temperature may be promising, offering high indicated efficiency without the danger of knocking combustion. The attempts to reach it were tested by Cooper-Bessemer at gas engines in early 50’s of last century (expansion cooling). Nevertheless, this issue has broader impacts on inlet air density and cycle cooling losses. A thermodynamic study of using more advanced cooling systems addresses this problem. Simultaneously, the application of a heat pump increases friction losses of an ICE. The limits of cooling efficiency required for positive effect on fuel consumption compensating friction loss may be found using the procedure described in a paper.
