Comparison of Various Fan Conceptions for Light Sport Aircrafts
Original language description
Unique propulsion system based on the ducted fan driven by piston engine was developed on the Department of Aerospace Engineering of the Czech Technical University in Prague. This system was successfully used for the propulsion of the UL-39 ultralight aircraft (maiden flight in February 2016). Many technical difficulties had to be solved during the development and design. It was often impossible to find any design reference in accessible literature. Four basic fan configurations are described, i.e. stator – rotor, rotor – stator, fixed inlet guide vanes – rotor – stator and movable inlet guide vanes – rotor – stator. The advantages and disadvantages of all these concepts are described and analysed based both on both on computations, experiments and experience with real aircraft operation. Thrust and efficiency are compared in the whole flight velocity range for all fan configurations. Results can be used for the fan design in this aircraft category.
