THE EXTENSION OF OPPORTUNITIES OF DUAL FUEL DIESEL-HYDROGEN ENGINE BY USAGE OF HYDROTREATED VEGETABLE OIL (HVO) INSTEAD OF REGULAR DIESEL FUEL

  • Original language description

The energy share of hydrogen in dual fuel diesel hydrogen engine is limited by the low chemical efficiency of combustion at low loads. Low load is typical operation mode of engines of passenger cars, therefore improving the parameters of low loads highlight the effects of dual fuel operation. Hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) has better ignitibility at cold conditions, higher cetane number and zero aromatic content. These parameters lead to higher possible energy share of hydrogen at low loads, while the chemical efficiency of combustion is not worsened in comparison with regular diesel fuel. Another benefits of HVO-hydrogen dual fuel operations are decreasing of CO emission, unburned hydrocarbon emission and particle emission. Well to wheel emission of CO2 is reduced by production of both HVO and hydrogen from renewable sources. Combination of both fuels reduces tail pipe emission of CO2 from combustion engines to level below the future requirements of regulations.
