Potential of data science in mechanical engineering – current trends impacting demand for mechanical engineering graduates
Original language description
Data science related buzzwords such as Big Data, artificial intelligence or machine learning have gained popularity in most fields of science and technology and the field of mechanical engineering is no exception. This paper uses an example of a wind turbines producer in order to demonstrate an increasing role of data science and the possibility of its application in various areas of the example company such as materials research, reliability and maintenance, project office or operations. With the current trends in data science and its expected further positive development, there will be a growing interest in machine engineers equipped with data science skills on the market. In order to meet the still evolving demand for specialists with skills addressing machine learning or Python, technical universities should take this evolution on the market into account when updating their study plans.
