Conceptual study of non-cylindrical tank for gaseous fuels
Original language description
For aviation usage of hydrogen propulsion systems, integration of pressurised tanks into the airframe is needed. In order to maintain similar flight performance as aircraft using petrol, these tanks need to have sufficient volume. Internal volume of airframes is not efficiently utilized by standard cylindrical or spherical tanks. Thus, tanks, whose shape can be adapted to the airframe, needed to be designed. This study first determines the amount of gaseous fuel needed to be comparable with petrol, then based on aircraft knowledge, maximal allowable mass of the tanks can be calculated. It is possible to design concepts of pressurised tanks which efficiently use internal space of the airframe, thanks to the knowledge of amount of gaseous fuel needed, maximal mass of the tanks and approximate geometry of the aircraft. These concepts are first examined analytically to get knowledge of their dimensions and weight, then further analysed by FEM.
