Ontology Service Agent with Web Ontology Language
Original language description
Ontologies are necessary for understanding in communication in multi-agent systems. For closed multi-agent systems, the ontology sharing problem can be solved by hard-coding the same ontologies directly into all agents. However, for open heterogeneous multi-agent systems, the need of explicit ontology handling is obvious. Agents need to be able to handle multiple ontologies in order to be able to communicate with other agents that can use different ontologies. FIPA proposed an ontology service agent that should be able to help other agents with tasks associated with using multiple ontologies. We analyze this proposal and describe its problems including the problems with the currently used semantic language SL and with using OKBC as a base for ontologies. We describe approaches used for handling multiple ontologies in the Semantic Web area and show how they can be used for multi-agent systems, particularly for the ontology service agent.
