SocketCAN is a subsystem in Linux kernel that allows Linux application to communicate with other devices over CAN bus. This work comprises two subprojects: 1) An analysis of timing properties of CAN-to-CAN gateway built with SocketCAN and 2) Adding quality of service (QoS) to CAN communication. The QoS part allows to configure the Linux system to ensure timeliness of real-time communication and to protect the CAN bus against overload by misbehaving applications. This freely accessible open-source project is based on the requirements and financial support of Volkswagen Wolfsburg.
