    Tunability of Low-doped Tm:CaF2 Crystal at Cryogenic Temperatures

    Tm:CaF2 is promising new 2 um-laser material. High Tm3+-doping of CaF2 leads to forming of complex structures necessary for chargecompensation. Using low doping makes these structures more simple but the absorption, necessary for efficient lasing, decreases. Nevertheless, an efficient lasing of low doped Tm:CaF2 (0.4 mol% of TmF3) laser active material was demonstrated at room temperature. Cryogenic cooling of Tm:CaF2 could even increase the efficiency of this laser moving the quasi-3-level system to low-threshold 4-level system and increasing absorption of ground-state. The goal of this work was an investigation of the temperature influence (in range from 80 up to 300 K) on the laser properties of low-doped Tm:CaF2 crystal used as a gain medium for generation of radiation around 1.8 mm.
