Study of chemical modification of hyaluronic acid

  • Original language description

The most important mucopolysaccharide, hyaluronic acid (HA), is a linear carbohydrate polymer. Its disaccharide monomeric unit is built up of N-acetyl D-glucosamine and D-glucuronic acid interconnected via b (1#4) and b (1#4) interglycosidic bonds. In aqueous solutions HA forms rigid domains built up from about 10 - 20 monomer units strongly bound by the systém of intra- and inter- molecular hydrogen bonds, thus producing its characteristics of secondary a tertiary configurations. These structures couldbe strongly influenced by insertion on n-alkyl spacers as a branch into this systems. For this reason, five n-alkyl derivatives on the CH2-OH groups of hyaluronic acid, from n-C6- to n-C16- were prepared. The following properties of these products are reviewed: Kinetic parameters of dissolution, study of enzymatic degradation, thermal analysis and measurements of its electric properties.
