Acid treatment of Chromed Leather Waste from Footwear and Garment Production
Original language description
Chrome tanned leather waste from footwear and garment production mainly land-filled at present time representing potential environmental risks. Acid rain slowly extracts chromic tanning salts from leather waste that are accumulated in ground water, oftenused after oxidation treatment as drinking water. Chromic salts are oxidised to highly carcinogenic Cr(VI) compounds. From environmental reason any other treatment of chromed leather waste than dumping is therefore desirable. Sulphuric and ortho-phosphoric acid treatment of chromed leather waste (scraps, cut-off waste) from footwear and garment production is presented. Using methods of mathematical statistical analysis optimal conditions of the processes are estimated. After leather scraps acid decomposition process, the reaction mixture is neutralised and precipitated chromic salts are filtered out and can be reused e.g. as a pigment or in tannery industry. The use of water-soluble protein hydrolysate as agricultural fertiliser is pro
