Modelling of Tannery Wastes Treatment for its Optimization
Original language description
The tanning process itself generates by-products. One tonne of hide will yield approximately 200 kg of leather, 250 kg of tanning solid waste, 350 kg non-tanning waste, and 200 kg is lost in waste water. In order to reduce reliance on land-filling, a process has been developed to convert these wastes to useful products. The process, based on enzymatic hydrolysis, produces a commercially-useful protein solution. Under the reaction conditions used, the protein-chrome complex is converted into insoluble chromic hydroxide which is easily removed from the reaction mixture by filtration. In this paper, a theoretical treatment of the process is presented and the total process costs calculated. A significant finding is the existence of a total cost minimum when a critical range of hydrolysis has been reached. This is the result of a balance between reaction costs and costs related to evaporating the reaction mixture to the final concentration.
