Control of the Shavings Enzymatic Hydrolysis
Original language description
The leather industry converts hides and skins, by products of the meat industry, into a valuable product. The tanning process itself generates by products. One tonne of hide will yield approximately 200 kg of leather, 250 kg of tanned solid waste, 350 kgnon tanned waste, and 200 kg is lost in waste water. Annually, some 108,000 tonnes of solid waste containing approximately 2,700 tonnes of chromium III are generated by tanneries in the EU. Currently, the majority of this solid waste is land-filled. There are suggestions that land-filling of chrome containing waste can result in leaching of chromium into the soil. It is thought that the acidity of rain in certain parts of Europe can result in the leaching of chromium from the solid waste into the soil.. In order to reduce the reliance on land-filling, a process has been developed to convert these wastes to useful products. The process based on enzymatic hydrolysis, produces a commercial useful protein solution. Under the reaction condi
