Biodegradation of oxidized polyvinylpyrrolidone (pre)treated by Fentons reagent or photo - oxidation reaction
Original language description
In our previous work has been proved that polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP K15 and PVP K30 difference in a molecular weight) is nonbiodegradable. Therefore it was necessary to adjust this polymer, to that the Fenton reaction (H2O2/Fe2+) and a photo-oxidative degradation (UV/H2O2) were used for its oxidative pretreatment. These way adjusted samples have been tested for biological degradability in an aerobic and an anaerobic aqueous environment. Both pre-oxidized PVP samples revealed approx. 50% of biodegradation in aerobic environment, whilst anaerobic process led to 45% of biodegradation. Raw (non-oxidized) samples of PVP K15 and PVP K30 were tested for their toxicity and the results showed no effect in concentration up to 6 g.l-1 against activated sludge.
