Fabrication of textured silk films via phase-separation approach for applica-tions in regenerative medicine

  • Original language description

The poor cell adhesion properties of silk protein (Bombyx mori) surfaces require additional surface treatments to increase the adhesive capabilities of selected cell lines. In this research, coatings made of the silk protein were structured using a dosed addition of solvent/non-solvent mixtures. To control over the surface modification process, we developed a specialized device that allows precise setting of process parameters, such as time delays or dosing volumes of droplets. By optimizing the process parameters for surface modification, we successfully controlled the formation of nano- to microporous structures on the silk surfaces. The surface modification also significantly depended on the initial secondary conformations of the protein i.e. content of beta-sheet structures. The textured surfaces exhibited improved properties for adhesion and proliferation of diverse cell lines, thus greatly expanding the potential applications of silk-based materials in the field of regenerative medicine.
