Structuring of silk-fibroin surfaces by phase separation
Original language description
Silk protein (Bombyx mori) surfaces are characterized by poor cell adhesion, hence additional surface treatments are required in order to create structured surfaces to increase the adhesive capabilities of selected cell lines. To solve this problem, surface treatment procedures use either patterning templates or preparation of polymer blends. Phase separation procedures are rather rare. In this study, silk protein-based coatings were structured by a dropwise addition of solvent/non solvent mixtures. A special device was developed to create controlled physical conditions during the multi-step, timesequenced surface treatment. The process parameters for the surface modification were optimized to control the texture formation from nano- up to microporous structures. The interaction of different cell lines was studied on the textured surfaces to explore their application scope in biomedical applications.
