CHITOSAN-BASED COMPOSITE HYDROGELS FOR BONE TISSUE ENGINEERING
Original language description
Critical-size bone defects pose significant challenges in orthopaedics due to the limited self-healing abilities and drawbacks of autografts or allografts. This study introduces a novel approach that combines hydrogels based on dialdehyde cellulose-crosslinked water-soluble half-N-acetylated chitosan (SCN), polypyrrole (PPy) nanoparticles, and BMP-2-loaded microspheres. These hydrogels display shear-thinning behaviour, enabling minimally invasive delivery into irregular defects. In vitro and in vivo studies confirm biocompatibility, anti-inflammatory properties, and bone regeneration.
