Bone defects, especially critical-size defects, present a significant challenge in orthopedic medicine, resulting in agrowing interest in advanced biomaterials that can promote bone regeneration and possess anti-inflammatory properties.Shear-thinning hydrogels are particularly promising biomaterials for this purpose, as they can mimic the naturalextracellular matrix, support cell proliferation and differentiation, be injected into irregular defect sites, and adapt to thedefect shape. In this study, we developed a chitosan/polypyrrole composite hydrogel with BMP-2-loaded microspheresfor the treatment of critical-size bone defects.
