The Importance of City Branding: Literature Review

  • Original language description

In an era of increasing global competition and urban transformation, city branding has emerged as a strategic governance tool used by municipalities to differentiate themselves, attract investment, and foster community engagement. This literature review aims to synthesize current academic research on city branding, with a particular focus on its role in public administration, stakeholder involvement, and regional development. The study applies a systematic review methodology guided by the PRISMA 2020 framework. Articles were selected from four elite academic journals ranked in the Academic Journal Guide 2021. Thirteen studies were analyzed to identify thematic trends, methodological approaches, and empirical findings relevant to city branding as a multidimensional governance strategy. The results reveal that successful city branding depends heavily on stakeholder participation, cultural coherence, and strategic alignment with policy frameworks. Participatory branding initiatives foster stronger place identity and public support, whereas top-down efforts often encounter resistance and fail to resonate with local communities. Additionally, digital media and social platforms offer new opportunities for engagement but require integration with offline strategies to create coherent brand narratives. The review also highlights that effective branding can enhance institutional trust, improve tourism outcomes, and support regional development objectives. This paper contributes to a more integrated understanding of city branding and offers practical insights for policymakers seeking to design inclusive, effective, and context-sensitive branding strategies.
