Monte Carlo simulation of the Bremsstrahlung radiation for the measurement of an internal contamination with pure-beta emitters in vivo
Result description
The feasibility of the bremsstrahlung radiation measurement for monitoring in vivo has long been known and the bremsstrahlung counting was used for 90Sr/90Y detection. An application of the MC simulations could extend the scope of the technique also to other pure-beta emitters and exposure scenarios. Not only 90Sr/90Y but also 30P and 89Sr should be considered as a potential source of contamination. A step-by-step work is described and discussed consisting of setting up the detector-source configuration for MC calculations, a validation of the calculations in benchmark experiments with simple setups, an extension of MC simulations to a whole body phantom and their validation with the use of a physical phantom. For physical measurements, two sources of bremsstrahlung radiation were prepared with 90Sr/90Y, simulating the radiation yield in soft and bone tissues. The sources were used in an UPh-02T phantom to collect spectra of both simple setup and a whole body distribution of the 90Sr/90Y source. Presented at International Conference on Individual Monitoring of Ionising Radiation, Bruges.
