Marine Nitrogen Fixation – from Single Cells to Productivity Estimates for a Warming Ocean

  • Anotace anglicky

N₂-fixing organisms play key role in the marine nitrogen and carbon cycle, providing reactive nitrogen to primary producers, mainly in the North Pacific Ocean, where nitrogen is often a limiting element. Understanding factors and mechanisms that determine the adaptations of N₂-fixing organisms to climate change is essential for predicting the productivity of marine systems. As heat waves become more extreme and frequent, project aims to understand how N₂-fixers respond to ocean warming on relevant timescales. Understanding processes at the cellular, population and community levels can be used to improve projections of future ocean productivity. Although many studies have examined the responses of N₂-fixers to climate change in the past two decades, suggesting up to a doubling of marine N₂ fixation by the end of the century, studies have largely focused on single model species in laboratory conditions and have mostly not taken into account the timescales of simulated temperature changes. Initial studies investigating complex communities under natural field conditions or using different time scales of thermal manipulation have shown that these factors can significantly influence the observed responses. As a result, significant uncertainties remain in predicting marine N₂ fixation under climate change. In project, we will focus on the mechanisms of temperature response at different levels, from single cell metabolism, through the role of intercellular heterogeneity at the population level, to the role of microbial interactions of diazotrophs with their associated microbiome in natural communities. Finally, we will scale these findings to predict global impacts. Collaboration between expert laboratories in Japan, ČR and Germany allows us to study these mechanisms using a comprehensive approach involving systematic laboratory experiments on several different species of N₂ fixers, mathematical modeling and in situ studies of natural communities in the North Pacific Ocean.
