Název projektu anglicky
Reinforcement of low-temperature butadiene/styrene rubber compounds with aramid fibres to provide fracture toughness under extreme conditions
Anotace anglicky
The scientific goal of this bilateral project is to improve the mechanical properties and fracture behavior of rubber under dynamic loading in extreme conditions. The project focuses on BR and VMQ rubber blends, the only two rubbers capable of operating at very low temperatures. However, their mechanical properties are insufficient for harsh environments, and therefore they will be reinforced with aramid fibers of different contents and orientations. Current knowledge of the mechanical properties of these materials at low temperatures, especially crack initiation and propagation, is still limited. Experimental investigation is challenging because of the rapid changes in properties near the glass transition temperature. Identifying the role of individual material components requires deep expertise in polymer physics, rubber behavior, and specialized experimental facilities available in a complementary way at both partner institutions. One of the main objectives is to gain new knowledge on fracture mechanisms, crack resistance at low temperatures, and the effect of fiber reinforcement. The role of fibers will be precisely determined and abrasion resistance characterized under different loading modes. The project also develop material models and numerical tools for predicting the behavior of rubber components at low temperatures. Two key modeling challenges must be addressed: simulation of the glass transition, i.e. the change from a viscoelastic to a glassy state, and inclusion of the effect of aramid fibers to optimize composition according to required properties, especially stiffness and wear resistance. The involvement of both partners is essential because of their complementary expertise. An important part of the project will be the design of validation tests for both experimental and numerical work. The project will mainly consider isothermal conditions, with future potential to extend toward more complex thermo-mechanical coupling.
