Memory, Space and Identity in German-Speaking (Transcultural) Literature from Modernity to the Present

Anotace anglicky

The project aims to devise a sketch of a “map of self-experience” of male and female authors who are biographically connected to the historic and geographical areas of today’s Slovak Republic, the Czech Republic, and Croatia and link it to the concepts of memory. Culture space in its broadest sense has been influenced by its collective events and forms the core of our cultural memory (Assmann, 1996). Literature takes on an important role as the medium of cultural memory in the landscape of remembrance (Erll 2005). We want to contribute to investigating the relations between memory, identity and space in the works of (transcultural) German-speaking authors who are biographically connected to Central European cultural space. Furthermore, we aim to identify relevant research questions within literary and cultural studies (such as the discussion of the term “modernity”, “the modern”, the “postmodern” pertaining to literary history or the question of postclassical narratology in terms of literary theory), and strengthen the collaboration of our institutions.
