Technology of restoration of Renaissance sgraffito plasters - tradition and metamorphosis

Anotace anglicky

The aim of the project is to revise the knowledge about Renaissance sgraffito, evaluate the protection of their original techniques and design, and develop new practical solutions for restoration. The revision is based on an interdisciplinary survey, material analysis and experimental study of the original methods. The project pays special attention to the surviving evidence of the original technique, and artistic and craft qualities of figural or decorative geometric and ornamental sgraffito, as the degradation of surfaces and repeated restoration interventions caused the gradual loss of these authentic elements. The project focuses on this vulnerable group, which is, on the one hand, a basic study material for it and, on the other hand, an object of interest in terms of preserving these unique documents for the future. New restoration solutions are based on a parametric description of the specific properties of sgraffito plasters. The research of materials and technologies focuses on the issue of restoring the adhesion of the plaster, as well as on the quality of the surface repairs. The specific focus of the project is the development of a new injection mixture and its practical application. Restoration of coherence with the substrate is a basic precondition for subsequent conservation, or restoration interventions. Another research goal of the project is the development of mortar mixtures for sgraffito reconstructions, which are based on original technologies, materials and traditional craftsmanship, but take into account the current conditions and specifics of restoration of monuments.
