Nomadic Spirituality: Unstable Buddhist Identities in East Asian Borderlands

In response to the challenges associated with migration, scholars in various fields have in recent decades focused on exploring borders and bordering processes. In turn, a rethinking of borders has been reflected in the scholarship on East Asia, where identities at the margins of cultures have been the focus of many historical and literary studies. However, most of these studies tend to overlook the spiritual aspects of modern borderland identities. This political and literary history project aims to emphasize the importance of Buddhism for the identification of prominent Chinese/Taiwanese writers, who in the first half of the 20th century lived at the meeting points of East Asian cultures and were subjected to the oppression of Western and Japanese colonialism: in the Chinese diaspora in Japan, in the Manchurian borderlands under Japanese rule, and in the Japanese colony of Taiwan. The project bridges Japanese and Chinese studies and draws on cultural, postcolonial, and border studies to create a novel multi-comparative analytical framework centred around the concept of nomadic spirituality, which challenges the hegemonic retrospective construction of fixed borders by pointing to the transitive spiritual dimension of East Asian borderland identities. Applying this framework, the project reads against the grain of overlooked historical and literary sources to redirect the history of East Asian borderlands to reflect the intimate geographical interconnectedness of the nomadic spiritual experience in East Asia. In this way, the project challenges binary analytical models limited to the borders of current nationstates that are anchored in oppositional logic (China vs. Japan) and artificially separate religious and secular histories. The analysis of unstable East Asian Buddhist identities demonstrates in a new way how borders work fluidly in a region that is strategically important for EU foreign and migration policy.
