Disadvantaged Communities in South India. Their Emancipation and the Building of New Identities

Anotace anglicky

The project tries to analyse trends in the Dalit movement in Tamil Nadu in the past 20 years. It focuses on the Pallars and Chakkiliyars, two important Dalit castes in Tamil Nadu, which have been somewhat neglected by researchers so far. Through a qualitative analysis of primary Tamil sources and semi structured interviews with caste leaders or intellectuals, the project aims at providing a description of the strategies these two castes have gradually adopted in order to emancipate themselves. It analyses the continuing process of ethnicization of these castes and their attempts at re/invention of their past. It tries to explore the extent of their political mobilisation and the ways they negotiate issues over which they have competing interests. Special attention is paid to the most disadvantaged caste, the Chakkiliyars, and their demands for sub-reservation. It will try to ascertain the extent these castes resist/succumb to the recent increased activities of the Hindu right.

Zhodnocení výsledků projektu

Projekt byl určen především k poznání terénu formou dvou delších pobytů v Indii. Projekt se zaměřil na emancipační strategie tří největších dalitských kast v Tamil Nadu. Struktura výstupů z grantu se proti zadání mírně změnila, bez vlivu na odborné výsledky. Projekt lze považovat za splněný.
