Early-Modern French Tragedy: Between Theory and Practice

Anotace anglicky

Our research aims mainly to the analytical confrontation between early-modern theoretical conceptions of the French tragedy and the approaches of this genre by dramatists such as Montchrestien, Hardy, Rotrou, Mairet, P. Corneille, Tristan, Racine. In addition, we shall also draw attention to pertaining analogies with other European literatures (England, Spain, Germany). By analysing the key categories of the poetics of the tragedy (verisimilitude, anagnorisis and peripeteia) we will question the continuity of the genre. The comparative method will lead us to new insights regarding the specific distortions between prescriptive poetics and various authorial strategies. We will study the interdependence between theory and practice and the manner in which they mutually determine each other. A set of case studies will enable us to a synthesis in which we should like to demonstrate the in/feasibility of the still surviving dichotomy of "baroque" and "classicist". We will thus focus on a critical investigation of arguments which founded this binary scheme.

Zhodnocení výsledků projektu

Hlavním výstupem projektu měla být monografie o raně novověké francouzské tragédii a několik menších výstupů v podobě článků a kapitol v knize. Některé články již vyšly, jiné jsou teprve v tisku s příslibem na vydání. Monografie ještě není ve stavu, kdy by se dalo očekávat její brzké vydání. Nicméně i tak lze považovat dílčí výsledky projektu za jistý přínos.
