Comparison of adjectives (and adverbs) is a grammatical category which has passed unnoticed by Latin linguists so far. Latin grammar books just simply say that adjectives are compared, and they describe forms of comparatives and superlatives, totally ignoring the question of which adjectives are compared. The fact that only certain types of adjectives – the scalar ones – are compared, is a notion well known in linguistics, though. The goal of the project is to carry out an extensive corpus analysis to identify scalar and non-scalar adjective types in Latin and describe – from the viewpoint of comparison/scalarity – semantic shift of individual adjective types and individual adjectives in Latin, including identification of metaphorical, “topical” (i.e. time- and place-bound) meanings. Thus, a seemingly purely linguistic analysis will allow a more accurate insight into usage of the language in the context (cultural, political etc.) of the period.
