Fear and disgust and their role in causation of animal phobias: a neuropsychological approach

Anotace anglicky

The formation of specific animal phobias is usually mediated by the dysregulation of both fear and disgust. It is assumed that in the case of snake phobia, which is one of the most common among the respondents, it is the malfunction of fear mechanisms that is responsible for its development. In our study, we will examine if disgust also contributes to the formation of ophidiophobia, because our preliminary results show that snakes may elicit both fear and disgust in humans. We will aim to find separate groups of respondents with contrasting sensitivity to both of these emotions. Moreover, we will assess which of the snake stimuli evoke fear and which disgust. Then, we will conduct a series of experiments in which we will measure physiological responses of the respondents to fear and disgust using various methods, including neuroimaging (fMRI) and eye tracking. If the results show that the perception of disgust also contributes to the dynamics of ophidiophobia, we will assess whether it is due to the effect of individual sensitivity to disgust or emotional valence of the stimuli.
