Institutionalization of unmarried cohabitations: obligations, inter-generational exchange, and couple disagreements in a comparative perspective

Cohabitation has been described as an “incomplete social institution”, but the institutionalization perspective has rarely been utilized to study the nature of unmarried co-residential unions across societies. We plan to re-visit the institutionalization perspective and apply it systematically and in a comparative perspective to several previously not so frequently researched domains such as patterns of inter-generational exchange, perceived level of inter-generational obligations, and disagreements within unions. We argue that differences between marriage and cohabitation would depend on the level of institutionalization of cohabitation in each context. The project will be built upon statistical analyses (mostly in the form of multi-level models with cross-level interactions) of secondary data from several surveys (EVS, ESS, SHARE, GGS) complemented with country-level indicators.
