Jan Jessenius Between History, Ideology ad Politics
Anotace anglicky
The aim of the project is to conduct research on the political thinking of the Estates’ opposition before the Battle of the White Mountain with an accent on the role of the physician, rector of Charles University and ‘ideologist of the Estates rebellion’, Jan Jessenius. The focus of attention will be on Jessenius’ treatises neglected by the research to date, in particular his texts about history, the use of history, and its flexible interpretation as a political and ideological instrument. In parallel, the political thinking of the anti-Habsburg opposition will be analysed using insufficiently exploited sources (Estates’ Apologies, personal correspondence), in which influences of the theory about the right to resistance of subjects against the ruler are at work (monarchomachism). Special attention will be paid to manifestations of monarchomachism in the milieu of the Prague University and its relationships with the representatives of the radical evangelical opposition. The principal project output will be a monograph Jan Jessenius Between History, Ideology and Politics.
