Transmission of Knowledge. The Fortune of Four Bestsellers in Late Medieval Czech Lands

The project encompasses the transmission of knowledge vis-à-vis the extending circles of recipients. It will focus on texts summarizing different branches of knowledge that can be labeled as compendia of knowledge. The research team will examine the ways in which the educated society accepted these texts in the 14th and 15th century with focus on communicative channels and will explore the reflection of dynamics of late medieval changes in these processes; emphasis will be put on the formation and transformation of the communities of readers of the selected texts. The analysis and mapping of the manuscript tradition will be applied to four selected texts: a pseudo-Aristotelian Secretum secretorum, a summary of a theological treatise (Elucidarium by Honorius of Autun), an allegorical explanation of the society (Liber de moribus hominum by Jacques de Cessolis) and historical synthesis (Chronicon pontificum et imperatorum by Martinus Polonus). These Medieval bestsellers were broadly received in Europe and in Bohemia, in both their Latin original and the vernacular versions.
